Landscapes

Although the Sahara is undoubtedly the most fantastical of Tunisia’s landscapes, other more unexpected landscapes will dazzle the most indifferent.

From north to south, Tunisia offers a veritable myriad of different ecosystems. Everything changes between the north-west, a mountain massif clad in cork oaks, and the Kerkennah Islands, a sandy archipelago surrounded by a silken sea. Or between Dahar, that grandiose landscape of desert and mountain, and the northern coastline with its wild creeks and fine sand beaches.

The Great Eastern Erg: magic of the Sahara

Tembaїne, at the heart of the desert, is a fascinating place, an ocean of dunes lying at the foot of a table mountain.

The Great Tunisian Erg is 40,000 sq. km. of sand. There are giant dunes, fields of sand roses, hot water lakes. Its main gates of entry are Douz, Nefta and Ksar Ghilane.

The south boasts of other striking natural landscapes, for example the immense Chott el-Jerid and the mountain oases.

The northern coastline: the Mediterranean in all its splendour

In Cap Zebib, near Bizerta, the whiteness of the erosion-sculpted rocks forms a brilliant contrast with the intense blue of the sea.

Other sublime panoramas stud the northern and north-eastern coasts, such as Dar El Janna, Marsa Dhouiba, Cap Engela et Cap Hmem, Kélibia.

Le Kef: the green mountains of Tunisia

The bracing air of the Atlas awaits you in the north-west of Tunisia. Around the town of El Kef are cliffs, rocks, fields of wheat, pine woods and dam lakes.

A fantastic place for sports events, like a Table of Jugurtha trail, or for losing oneself in classical history at the Makhtar site.

Dahar: landscapes out of Dante

Around the village of Toujane, the arid mountains with their craggy peaks form a majestic landscape where the strata of the earth’s history may be read.

Further south stretch lunar landscapes dotted with rocky outcrops. Ghomrassen, Zammour, Tataouine, Chenini et Douiret… This mountainous region of southern-eastern Tunisia is an authentic land to whose attraction none can be indifferent.
